Description
A South Africa Medal. The silver medal features a young head profile of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA REGINA " is embossed around the profile. The reverse features an African lion crouching in submission and a protea shrub. A Zulu shield and assegais are embossed below this. The medal is attached to a gold ribbon with thick and thin blue stripes by an ornamental scrolled suspension bar.An "1878-9 " clasp is attached to teh ribbon. " 508 PTE. J. SIGLEY 80TH FOOT " is marked on the edge. The ribbon is mounted on cardboard.

This medal was awarded to J. Sigley for his service during the South Africa campaign of 1877-1879. It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the collection of prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
