Medal, Abyssinian War

An Abyssinian War Medal. The silver medal features a left facing veiled portrait of Queen Victoria framed by a zigzag pattern interspersed with floral ornaments. " ABYSSINIA " is spelled out between the pattern. "147 / GUNR. / T. EVANS / 18TH BRIGDE. R.A." is embossed on the reverse. The embossing is surrounded by a wreath. The medal is suspended from a red ribbon with broad white edges by a large ring attached to a crown which stands proud from the rest of the medal. The ribbon is mounted on wood.

This medal was awarded to T. Evans of the Royal Artillery for his service during their campaign in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1867-1868. It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a collection made by south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
