Ovalipes catharus. Swimming Crab. It is a large crab. Pale in colour with a reddish tinge around the edges. The hind legs are paddle shaped used for swimming in the open seas.

It is found off sandy beaches, harbours and estuaries throughout New Zealand. They are active in early evening or night time when they move into the intertidal zone to feed. They are opportunistic predators feeding mainly on molluscs or other crustaceans.
