Ophionereis fasciata. Mottled Sand star. A small thin starfish. It has a small round central disc with five long thin arms. The arms are covered in small spines. It is a dark grey/black colour with thin white bands on the arms.

It is found in the low intertidal or shallow subtidal zones around New Zealand. There are some rare records of it being found at 300m deep. This species is bioluminescent so when disturbed blue flashes can be seen along the arms. It is only seen at night.
