Description
A Khedive's Star. The bronze five pointed star features a circular centre with the Sphinx and pyramids pictured. " EGYPT 1884-86 " is marked around the edge of the circle. The lower part of the band is embossed in Arabic " KHEDIVE OF EGYPT " with the appropriate date. The reverse features the monogram inscription of Khedive Tewfik Pasha of Egypt surmounted by a crown and surrounded by a circle. The star is suspended from a dark blue ribbon by an ornamental clasp with a star and crescent in the centre. The ribbon is mounted on cardboard. Another faded ribbon accompanies it.

This star was issued by Khedive Tewfik Pasha of Egypt. See The Fitzwilliam Museum http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/dept/coins/collection/watson/page191.html  . It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a large collection made by the prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
