My father Eric Owen ( second from left front row) played first five eight for Taranaki for many years. In combination with the player sitting next to him Johnston the half back - they were a formidable combination in the days when Taranaki was one of the nost feared teams in the country. My father was selected for All Black trials, but at the peak of the Great Depression his employer stock and station Newton King told him it was the trials or his job - things were a bit different in those tough times.
