Description
A Naval General Service Medal. The silver medal features a young head profile of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA REGINA 1848 " is embossed around the profile. The reverse features Britannia holding her trident and an olive branch while riding a seahorse. " WM MENEAR " is marked on the edge. The medal is attached to a white ribbon with dark blue edges via a straight bar. A " SYRIA" clasp is attached to the ribbon. The ribbon is mounted on cardboard.

This medal was issued to William Menear. Naval General Service medals were issued to members of the Royal Navy for naval battles and boat actions between 1793-1840. They were issued to surviving claimants in 1848. The clasp on this medal indicates it was issued for the Syria campaign of 1840. It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the collection of prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
