This nondescript chemist's bottle tells a rather interesting story about how street names are not always what they appear. At the bottom of the bottle's label is the address of Westown Pharmacy, said to be on Tukapo Street. Although this might look like a typing error, in fact between 1930 and 1968, this was the 'correct' spelling. The name was changed from Elliott Street to Tukapo Street by 1930. The name Tukapo came from a chief who had been in the area and was temporarily blinded by a lightning flash. He named the area Tu kapo - to stand blinded. However in 1968, the chief Surveyor Colin Allen changed the spelling to today's Tukapa, and his reasoning remains unknown. To this day the spelling is Tukapa, but whether this will always be the case remains to be seen.
