Description
A New Zealand War Service medal 1939-45. The cupro-nickel medal features a portrait of King George VI on the obverse."GEORGE IVS VI D:G: BR OMN:REX FD :IND:IMP" is embossed around the outside. Two fern fronds act as the suspender for the medal. "FOR/SERVICE TO/NEW ZEALAND/1939-1945" is marked on the reverse of the medal. It is mounted with the reverse side upwards.

This medal was awarded to James Edward Prestidge. who was born in Matapū and schooled at Matapu Primary. During World War II he served as a private in the 14th Brigade Defence and Employment platoon, 14th Brigade Medium Machine Coy., 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force and served in the Pacific. James died on 24/07/2007 and is buried in the RSA section of the Eltham cemetery: http://public.stdc.govt.nz/cemeteries/  Record number 22151.
