New Plymouth Airport

Production date
1966-1967
Description
Aerial view of New Plymouth airport on Brown Road (later renamed Airport Drive). There is a New Zealand National Airways Corporation (NZNAC) Fokker Friendship aircraft being serviced on the runway in front of the airport buildings. Several people are gathered in front of the building and there are two people in uniform standing near a baggage cart in front of the plane. The runway extends into the foreground. There is a row of cars parked behind the building. Two tanks on a small hill can be seen in the background as well as two houses. The area in the background is largely undeveloped land.

The photograph is likely to have been taken shortly after the airport opened for operation on November 7 1966. This airport replaced a grass field airport that had been operating at Bell Block.
