Description
Oval-shaped copy photograph of Colonel Frederick Augustus Smith, 43rd Regiment. Smith was born in 1826 and entered the British Army in 1849. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 21st June 1864 at Te Ranga, Tauranga, where he was wounded in battle. He retired in 1878 and died in 1887. Smith is wearing a mid-tone three-piece suit and is sitting on a chair looking towards his right. He has a moustache. The photograph is included on page 33 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
