"Kaihihi Rd."

Production date
1999
Description
Oil on canvas painting depicting an aerial view of the Kaihihi Road area, Ōkato, Taranaki. The intersection between Kaihihi Road and South Road (State Highway 45) can be seen in the foreground of the artwork. Kaihihi Road snakes up from the foreground through farmland and veers to the right. The Stony River is depicted as a thin blue line emerging from the left and passing under a road bridge. A few houses and buildings, conveyed through loose brush strokes, dot the landscape. Carter has executed the painting in thick, highly textured oils and has used bold, gestural brushstrokes. It is part of his road series for which he would walk along a road with his sketch pads and make drawings recording the shapes and features of the land. The many drawings were then condensed into single artworks that give composite aerial views of his journey.
