Description
Copy photograph of John Lucas, Colour Sergeant of the 40th Regiment. Lucas was born in Ireland in 1826 and was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1861. He later achieved the rank of Sergeant-Major and returned to Ireland where he died in 1892. The photograph is a portrait bust and shows Lucas in military uniform with his Victoria Cross. He has a moustache with a very full beard and sideburns. The photograph is included on page 31 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
