Copy photograph of Ensign Toseland, 40th Regiment. The top right corner of the photograph has been cut on an angle. Toseland is wearing a long dark coat over mid-tone trousers and a waistcoat. He has sideburns. He is standing with a cane in his right hand and his left hand resting on the back of an elaborately carved chair. A top hat is resting on the chair. Toseland is in a studio setting with a painted backdrop of a column, curtain and landscape behind him. The photograph is included on page 30 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
