Copy photograph of Colonel Robert Carey, 40th Regiment. Carey (1821-83) served as Deputy Adjutant General for the forces in Waikato in 1863 and was promoted to Colonel for the action of Rangiriri from 1863-65. Carey is wearing full military uniform. He is holding a sword that is standing on the patterned floor. There is a studio backdrop behind him with a window and fireplace to his left and a bookcase to his right. There is also a wooden table to his right with books on it. Carey has a full moustache and sideburns, and a receeding hairline. The photograph is included on page 30 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
