This blue satin sash was awarded to Beverly Coates, who won the Miss Brooklands competition in 1973. Beverly was 19 when she won, and was working as a typist for the Farmers Co-Op Ltd and was sponsored by Taranaki Newspapers Ltd. Her maids were Rachel Garlic and Brownyn Price.

The Miss Brooklands competition was part of the Festival of the Pines, and began in 1958 along with the first festival. The winners of the competition were selected to represent Taranaki in a range of fields, and were chosen not because of their beauty but for their personality, intelligence, a good speaking voice and style, knowledge of Taranaki and poise. The winners were expected to act as advocates and ambassadors for the region. The winners also travelled through New Zealand and overseas encouraging visitors to come to Taranaki. There was also a reciprocal agreement with the Hastings Carnival, where the Hastings Carnival Queen and Miss Brooklands visited each other’s town and were guests at each other’s balls and fetes. The Miss Brooklands competition ended on its 25th anniversary in 1983.
