Purchased as part of the Mr P.N. Johnson Collection. This large metal mortar may have been used by early pharmacists for grinding up powders and materials to turn into pills and other concoctions. This is quite different to producing medications today, where the majority of the manufacturing is done on an industrial scale, outside of your local pharmacy.
