This well-worn badge hints at the multilayered history present at the site of the New Plymouth Prison on Marsland Hill. This button belonged to a member of the Royal Engineers. The regiment were stationed at the barracks at Marsland Hill during the 1860s. After the end of the Taranaki Wars, the old military hospital on the site was converted to become the New Plymouth Prison, and it was on the grounds of the prison that this button was uncovered.
