This well-worn badge hints at the multilayered history present at the site of the New Plymouth Prison on Marsland Hill. This button belonged to a member of the 65th Regiment, colloquially known as the "Royal Tigers" or the "Hickety Pips", named for the Maori pronunciation of 65th. The regiment were stationed at the barracks at Marsland Hill during 1860 and 1861. After the end of the Taranaki Wars, the old military hospital on the site was converted to become the New Plymouth Prison, and it was on the grounds of the prison that this button was uncovered.
