Copy photograph of Lieutenant John Soame Richardson, 12th Regiment. Richardson (1836-96) served in the Taranaki and Waikato Wars from 1860 to 1864 before moving to New South Wales. He went on to serve in the Franco-Prussian War and in Sudan and in 1894 was committed to a mental health insitution in Sydney where he died. Richardson is shown wearing military uniform and is sitting on a wooden chair. He has a moustache and a full beard. There is a pedestal with a curtain behind it to his right. The photograph is included on page 26 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
