Red Cross proficiency badges were initiated in Britain from 1914. To achieve a badge like this one for Hygiene and Sanitation, members had to have three Red Cross certificates in associated subjects, with an interval of at least 12 months between the dates of each certificate achieved. This badge was awarded to Miss M. Young, but little is known about her and her work for the New Zealand Red Cross.
