This cap is an early example of the famous "amber and black" colours so immediately recognised as the Taranaki rugby colours. The Taranaki Rugby Football Union took on the amber and black colours in 1892 as official, after a brief dalliance with chocolate brown, and this cap was produced for representing Taranaki a year later. However, it is a little mysterious as to who actually wore this cap. Bernie Walsh purchased this cap from an estate sale of a Mr Ryan in the 1980s. Mr Ryan had been an account in Hawera, and possibly this cap belonged to him or a family member of his.
