The Patea Maori Club are based in Patea in South Taranaki, and the group developed after the closing of the freezing works in 1984 led to high unemployment in the South Taranaki town. They are best known for their number 1 hit single Poi E, and meld together poi, waiata and breakdancing. The Patea Maori Club aimed to re-activate pride for young Maori in being Maori. Aku Raukura was written by Prime and linguist Ngoi Pewhairangi in one day, in order to help young alienated Maori reconnect with their culture in a medium they were interested in and understood. This tape is a single, and Aku Raukura got to Number 12 on the New Zealand music charts.
