Roy Charters and Rowan Guthrie, wearing military uniform, pictured at Bell Block, New Plymouth. Guthrie is seated on the right and has a pipe in his mouth. Charters is standing next to him with his hands in his pockets. An image of a military aircraft is visible behind them. Both men were posted to the military base in New Plymouth in 1944 and became good friends while they were there. Charters had purchased Arthur Glanville-Clark's studio in 1938, which was run by Charters' wife Shirley during the war. Charters and Guthrie eventually decided to go into business together, Rowan Guthrie buying into the business in circa 1950. Their firm, Charters and Guthrie, became very well known and respected in New Plymouth.
