Medal , Verdun (Prudhomme)

Description
A Verdun Medal, Prudhomme version (Médaille de Verdun, modèle Prudhomme). The bronze medal features a left facing profile of a helmeted and uniformed figure representing the French Republic. A laurel, " 1916 " and " VERDUN" is marked behind it. The reverse features a plaque fringed by roses. " AUX / GLORIUEX / DEFENSEURS / DE / VERDUN " (To the glorious defenders of Verdun) is marked on the reverse. A crimson ribbon with a thin white and blue stripe near either edge and it fitted with a metal bar with " VERDUN " marked on it. It is attached to the medal by a simple suspension ring through a horizontally pierced barrel shaped suspender.

" The Battle of Verdun, fought between the Germans and the French throughout most of 1916, was arguably the most influential battle of the Great War and had enormous consequences on subsequent Allied strategies. The medal was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a large collection made by south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
