Jacket

Production date
1864
Description
A blue and white checked silk jacket that was altered from an earlier jacket. The original boned bodice structure which is buttoned to the neck has a pointed waist tapering at the height of the hip and extending down around the rear to a long pointed slit line with a centre-back seam. The whole centre-back piece may have been replaced as it is longer than the one beneath and it is pleated. There are additions of cream-coloured velvet that are puffed out and inserted in the upper part of the sleeves. The jacket features eyelet fastened cuffs and stomacher. A puffed front of velvet covering most of the original front. There is a wide hip band of velvet to match the deep hem along the front of the skirt.

This jacket is part of a wedding outfit worn by Lavinia Sampson. Lavinia married Thomas Clare at Bell Block in 1864. They had a large family. Later the dress was worn by Lavinia's eldest daughter Jane when she married Richard Aroa at New Plymouth. This was probably when it was altered.
