Object Detail

Copy photograph of Colonel Sir James Edward Alexander, 2nd Battalion, 14th Regiment. Alexander is seated and is wearing full military dress uniform. He is resting one arm against an object, possibly a table covered with cloth. He has a number of medals pinned to his chest. Alexander (1803-85) was a Scottish soldier and author. He retired from active service in 1877 and in 1881 was given the honorary rank of general. The photograph is included on page 23 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
