A New Zealand Medal. The silver medal features a left facing crowned profile of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA D:G:BRITT:REG:F.D " is marked around the edge of the profile. A wreath is featured on the reverse with " NEW ZEALAND VIRTUTIS HONOR " marked around the edge of it. " LIEUT J. KELLY TARANAKI M. S. " is marked on the edge. The medal is attached to a blue ribbon with a central red stripe by a straight suspension bar ornamented with fern leaf designs.

This New Zealand Medal was awarded to John Kelly. Kelly arrived in the Cresswell in 1855 and served in the Taranaki Wars. Lieutenant in the Taranaki Militia in 1863 and later promoted to Captain. He married Annie Flight in the 1860s and settled in Lepperton as a farmer, moved into New Plymouth in later life. Died in October 1917 as “a very old and respected member of the district.”
