Copy photograph of Corporal James Russell, Armed Constabulary, who was killed on 7 September 1868 in the battle at Te Ngutu o te Manu, South Taranaki. Russell is wearing military uniform and is standing next to a pedestal supporting an ornate vase. Russell has one hand resting on the vase. A cockatoo is perched on the vase. A curtain is visible on the left of the image. The photograph is included on page 19 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
