This message in a bottle was dispatched by five members of the cargo freighter Papuan Chief on 6 August 1978. At this time it is thought the freighter had been chartered by the New Guinea Australia Line for the service between Australia and Papua New Guinea. It was found by Ian Mercer on the beach at Pihoi, near the Awakino River, on 24 January 1980. The lid was sealed with masking tape when it was found. The Mercers wrote a letter using the details provided on the message but never received a response.
