Sadler, Alice Fanny [diary]

Production date
1871
Description
An indexed household journal kept by Alice Fanny Sadler (nee Ellis) (1837-1910) beginning in 1871.
Alice arrived in New Zealand from England with her husband Robert Stebbing Sadler and daughters Dorothy Paradine and Mary Alice sometime before 1895. They settled in Taranaki, where her son Godfrey William Sadler had been killed in early 1891 while working as farm cadet for the Halcombe family of Urenui.
The journal begins before her immigration to New Zealand and continues throughout the family's early years in Taranaki. No end date is mentioned but some tips are quoted from Taranaki folk. The journal includes handwritten recipes and household tips such as a remedy for head colds, advice for washing clothes, how to wash a hairbrush and how to clean patent leather.
