Copy photograph of Sub Inspector Frederick Charles Rowan, Armed Constabulary and formerly the 43rd Regiment of Foot, pictured with his unknown servant. Rowan is seated and has a cane tucked under one arm. He is wearing a suit and has a bandage tied around his face. His servant is standing behind his chair and holds a writing tablet in one hand, which rests upon a small table. A vase of flowers a hat are also sitting on the table. A studio backdrop is visible on the left of the image. Rowan was shot in the face during the battle of Te Ngutu o te Manu, South Taranaki, on 7 September 1868. The photograph is included on page 19 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
