Description
Carved wooden tauihi (canoe figurehead) resting on rocks at the beach. Several of the Sugar Loaf Islands are visible in the background. The photograph was taken to be included in a calendar published in 1970 by Ivon Watkins Dow, the agricultural chemicals company. This tauihu is thought to be from ‘Kaupahanui’, the waka Wiremu Kīngi te Rangitaake used to lead Te Ātiawa home to Waitara from Waikanae in 1848 (see A78.128).
