Description
Two letters written by Godfrey Sadler to his sister Mary Alice Sadler. The first was written on 21 December 1887 while travelling to New Zealand aboard the passenger ship 'Tongariro'. The second was written on 2 April 1888 while working as a farm cadet near Inglewood.
Godfrey arrived in New Zealand in 1888 aboard the R.M.S. Tongariro. In Taranaki he took up a cadetship with the Bewley family on their farm 'Leighhurst' near Inglewood. He later worked for the Halcombe family in Urenui. While working for the Halcombe’s in Waitara he was kicked in the abdomen by a horse and a few hours later on 18 May 1891 he died, presumably from internal injuries caused by the kick.
He was survived by his parents Robert Stebbing and Alice Fanny (nee. Ellis) Sadler and two sisters Dorothy Paradine Sadler (later Sumner) and Mary Alice Sadler (later Tweddie).
A full transcript of the letter are available.
