Opunake Diesel Excursion

Production date
21 Oct 1967
Description
On Saturday 21 October 1967 a Db diesel locomotive passenger train travelled to Opunake on the Opunake Branch Railway line departing and arriving at New Plymouth. It was the first passenger trip over the route since 1936. 208 passengers boarded the train at New Plymouth at 8.45 am. The train travelled through Inglewood, Stratford, Eltham and Kapuni arriving at Opunake at 11.30 am, picking up addition passengers along the way. In Opunake passengers viewed the film 'Von Ryan's Express' at the 'Everybody's' Opunake theatre. The train left Opunake at 2.30 pm and arrived back in New Plymouth at 5pm following the Te Roti-Opunake branch line which had been constructed 40 years previously. Along the route the train made numerous 'photostops' to allow passengers to take photographs of the scenery.
Collection consists of items relating to the 1967 Opunake Diesel Excursion, including newspaper clippings, an itinerary for the trip, a receipt for tickets and a train ticket.
