Taranaki Travellers Club

Production date
The Taranaki Travellers Club was formed in 1978 by a group of likeminded people who attended a series of lectures entitled ‘Travellers Tails’ at W.E.A. Some attendees of these lectures formed a small group which met independently to share slides, photographs and stories of trips around the world and also give tips and warnings about particular areas. In November 1978 the inaugural meeting of the Taranaki Travellers Club was held as the New Plymouth Education Centre. With increased attendance it quickly outgrew this venue and in March 1979 the club moved to the Senior Citizens Hall on Liardet Street. In 1986 the venue was again changed, this time to the Beach Street Hall, Fitzroy. In its early years the club was affiliated to the Taranaki WEA and also to the Link Association. The club met on the fourth Thursday of each month from March to November. The talks were described as informative and friendly and were illustrated by slides and covered a wide range of countries, including New Zealand. A door charge of $2 was incurred. The club wound up in early 2000 after membership dwindled and the main organisers retired due to old age.
Collection consists of records for the Taranaki Travellers Club. Records include minute books, scrapbooks, posters and membership lists.
