Description
A small plaster model of an Irish thatched cottage with two doors, three tiny windows, a cork roof and chimney, a small flower garden, two large gardens of bracken and rock and an open gate. The cottage is sitting on a thick, rectangular cork base with a wooden board on the underside. "Made by the Original Inventor, Fred C. Shackleton & His Co-Workers" is stamped on the underside of the base along with a handwritten note from Hilda Webb regarding its history.

Humble thatched and whitewashed cottages have been a feature of the Irish countryside for centuries. While many are now used as tourist accommodation or preserved as a reminder of times past an 1841 census showed that nearly half the population were living in one roomed cabins with mud walls.
This model cottage was donated to Taranaki Museum in 1985.
