Copy photograph of a studio portrait of Dr Patrick Joseph Felix Valentine O'Neill O'Carroll, Assistant Surgeon, Waikato Militia. O'Carroll is pictured leaning against an ornate carved pedestal holding his military cap in one hand and the hilt of his sword in the other. He is wearing military uniform and is looking away from the camera. A painted backdrop is visible in the background. He was born in 1843 in Dublin, Ireland. After completing his medical training, he emigrated to New Zealand, later marrying Alice Carrington, second daughter of Octavius Carrington at St Mary's Church, New Plymouth on 27 October1869. After suffering ill health, he returned to Dublin and died there on 14 August 1903. The photograph is included on page 14 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".

Doctor O'Carroll's full name is Patrick Joseph Felix Valentine O'Neill O'Carroll. He was born in 1844 in Dublin, Ireland. After completing his medical training, he emigrated to New Zealand, later marrying Alice Carrington, second daughter of Octavius Carrington at St Mary's Church, New Plymouth on 27/10/1869. He worked as a surgeon in the Land Wars, also at Base Hospital and in private practice. After suffering ill health, he returned to Dublin and died there on 14/8/1903.
