Copy photograph of the Reverend Carl Sylvius Volkner, who was hanged by Maori at Opotiki on 2 March 1865. Volkner is pictured leaning against the frame of a doorway with an object held in one hand. He is wearing a suit and a clerical collar. The photograph is included on page 11 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
