Description
Carte-de-visite photograph showing a reception for Edward Metcalf Smith and his workmen after three tons of iron were produced by the New Zealand Titanic Steel and Iron Company Ltd smelter at the mouth of the Te Henui River. The photograph shows an interior view of the Odd Fellows' Hall set up with a display relating to ironsands mining. The stage is surrounded with banners. The banners read: "ADVANCE TARANAKI"; "IRON is the KING of STRENGTH / STEEL is the EMPEROR of MIGHT"; TRADE & COMMERCE" and "SCIENCE CONQUERS". The rear of the carte-de-visite includes a photograph of printed text. One column of the photographed text is a poem called "THE IRON MAN" by 'W.H.B.', written on 23 September 1876. The second column of photographed text is called "SMELTING THE IRONSAND".
