This plaque was originally placed near the main entrance to Taranaki Museum and was unveiled by the Minister of Māori Affairs Ralph Hanan during the opening ceremonies of the New Plymouth War Memorial Library, Museum and Hall on 3 July 1960. The impetus for the plaque, designed and cast by James Johnstone an influential teacher at Canterbury College School of Art in Christchurch, came from the Skinner family together with Taranaki Museum curator Rigby Allan. In Puke Ariki the plaque is mounted on Level 2 of the South Wing, near the entrance to the air bridge.
