Description
A heart shaped brass enamelled medal. The medal features a blue enamelled badge around the edge and white and red enamelled letters at the centre. The medal is attached to a blue ribbon with thin red stripes near the edge by a simple suspension ring. The ribbon is topped by an ornate bar bearing an enamelled crest." INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODDFELLOWS MANCHESTER UNITY " is marked on the blue enamel band. "Presented / to / Bro. H. Mullon / Loyal Excelsior Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F. / 1924 /" is marked on the reverse of the medal which is held in a presentation case. A series of makers marks are also evident on the reverse. The underside of the lid of the case is lined with silk which features now illegible maker's mark and " H D Mullon " handwritten repeatedly on it.

This medal belonged to Herb Mullon a writer, philatelist, broadcaster and enthusiast for New Zealand history. Mullon was a member of the New Plymouth Public Library and Taranaki Museum committee for nearly 25 years and later the Board of the Taranaki Museum. He was instrumental in arranging several significant gifts to the Museum including the Western Library.
His newspaper columns and radio broadcasts under the non de plume ‘Simon Sam’ helped raise the profile of the Museum.
