Godwit, Eastern Bar-Tailed
A female eastern bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica baueri) specimen in winter plumage. The specimen is mounted on a wooden base with its head cocked to one side.
The New Zealand population of Godwits is from the subspecies Limosa lapponica baueri which breed in Alaska. They are common around many harbours throughout the country. They do not breed until 4 years of age. Some non-breeding birds remain here for the winter.
