Description
In 1883 the Recreation Board held a fair to raise funds for developing the Recreation Ground (now Pukekura Park). As part of the fundraising the Board produced a newspaper titled Ye Mercury. The newspaper stated: "Printed for ye benefitte of ye funds of ye Recreation Ground and Sold in ye Olde English Fayre held in ye Great Hall yclept Alexandra, which for the nonce is changed into a street of ye Olden Tyme. This paper is sold to every one for ye small sum of THREE PENNIES, but no change is returned to those who give Sylver." Includes an account of the formation of Pukekura Park.
