New Plymouth Council for Social Services

Production date
1947-1991
Description
The New Plymouth Council for Social Services was formed in 1947 when a group of likeminded women met to discuss organising the establishment of a private residence to home elderly ladies. The Bingham Bequest - a large sum of money left in trust from the will of Clara Emily Mary Bingham for the purpose of helping to establish such a home, but not to be administered by a hospital of charitable aid board - was used to establish the Council. The Council administered Bingham and Tuarua Houses, a group of 16 flats used to accommodate elderly mobile women aged 65-80 years who were capable of cooking and cleaning their own flats and maintaining reasonable health for their age. The Council was disestablished and properties sold in 1991.
This collection consists of the records of the New Plymouth Council for Social Services 1947-1991 including minute books, correspondence, annual reports, scrapbooks and photos.
