"St John Ambulance Parade, New Plymouth, ANZAC Day"

Production date
1940s
Description
Group of St John Ambulance Nursing Division staff on parade during ANZAC Day, New Plymouth. The women are being led by a man in uniform and most are dressed in pinafores with waist length capes and hats. The division is marching past the Ngamotu Lodge of Freemasons which used to stand on the corner of Leach and Liardet streets.
Louisa Pipe has been identified as the woman directly beneath the third window on the right of the building in the background - wearing glasses with her head turned towards the photographer.
The woman marching directly behind the man has been identified as Maud Mary Findlay Bishop (nee Leighton) who was working as a nurse in Scotland during the First World War when she met wounded New Zealand soldier Ernest John Bishop. He returned to Taranaki and she came out to marry him in 1922. The couple farmed on Egmont Road.
