Mr Henry Newman's drapery, grocery and ironmongery business in Opunake. Standing outside the shop are (from left to right) Mr Callender, F. Des Forges and Henry James Newman (1864-1946). Established in 1880 by Henry's father James Honeyfield Newman and located opposite Middleton's Hotel at 87 Tasman Street, the store burned down on 6 June 1897.

The Taranaki Herald, Volume XLVI, Issue 10938, 7 June 1897, Page 2 has the shop burning down on the 6th of June. "The fire was confined to Mr Newman't premises, there being a gap of 22ft on one side and 27ft on the other side. The nearest buildings were Feaver'a chemist shop, and Flynn'a, bootmaker, on the one side, and McGregor's, saddler, and Stitt's store on the other side. Their stocks were considerably damaged by removal. " The shop was recorded as being opposite Middleton's Hotel

This is my Great Grandfathers Shop which burnt down in the big fire that involved Middleton's Hotel and other shops.
