Description
An Yser Cross. The bronze cross features a male figure barring the way with a lance on the obverse. "17 - 31 / OCT / 1914" is also marked on this side. The reverse shows a Belgian lion, wounded in the flank, on the banks of the Yser. " YSER " is marked underneath the lion. A small integral circular suspension medallion is infilled with green enamel at the top. It bears the obverse inscription "YSER" and a crown and "A" on the reverse. The cross is attached to a black ribbon with a red central stripe. Remnants of green enamel are also evident spread over other parts of the surface.

The Yser Medal and Cross was awarded to those who fought along the Yser River in October 1914. The medal was instituted in 1918 and the design was amended in 1934, and renamed the Yser Cross. This cross was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the collection of prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
