View of Whakawhitiwhiti pā. Pā is visible on the top of the hill in the background of the image. The pā consists of an inner bank, surrounded by a ditch. An outer ditch and bank protect the south and north sides and part of the east side. Below the pā there is a residential street with houses on either side. Site is located just off Omata Road, New Plymouth. NZAA site number P19/16.

A question, sorry, rather than a comment. I grew up in Westown (1942 until 1955) and as a child I vaguely remember going on bike rides with my friends to see the 'Maori carvings'. I think we would have biked down Tukapa St (of course there was much less development in those days) but I don't recall exactly where the carvings were or what they were like. I wonder if they may have been connected with the Whakawhitiwhiti pa, which I've just learnt about?
