This photograph records the first official trans-Tasman airmail delivery from Sydney, Australia to New Plymouth, New Zealand. The aeroplane, 'Faith in Australia', was captained by Charles Thomas Phillipe Ulm and landed in New Plymouth with 35,709 letters and 1,397 registered articles aboard. The mail weighed 546 lb and was carried in 12 bags. The flight took 16 hours 46 minutes. It wasn't until 1940 that a regular airmail and passenger service commenced between Australia and New Zealand.
